CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter Name: Clint Barton
Age: early-mid 30s (I tend to say 33ish)
Canon: Marvel Comics
Canon Point: Hawkeye #21 (Fraction/Aja run)
Character Information: Marvel Wikia page. He is, for the record, coming from a canon point when he is relying on hearing aids to functionally communicate.
Personality:Clint Barton spent his formative years as a circus performer, and at heart that is what he is. That sounds like it's not giving him enough credit, but it's the truth - he is a performer. He likes being in the spotlight, he likes calling the shots - over the years he has matured out of thinking he should always be in the spotlight or calling the shots, but it's something that is very central to who he is.
He's also become - through his life and training, in probably equal parts - something of a violent, weapon-like person, at least in his eyes. He doesn't like that he's become someone who sees a weapon in everything and often makes use of them, though he'd never judge someone else for that very same instinct. In truth, it's more that he's always got a weapon on hand because he learned that sometimes he won't have his bow or any other actual weapon and he'll need to improvise, and so over the years he's started automatically taking note of where items of use are. Still, it makes him uncomfortable, and exacerbates the self-loathing that underlies basically everything about him.
Because that's the thing - no matter how much he might cockily say he's the best there is, Clint really doesn't like himself. He's failed a lot of people, or feels like he failed them - starting way back when he was a child and he wasn't good enough for his parents to be happy, and then they died. No, it wasn't his fault, and consciously he knows that, but it was the first in a long line of subconsciously-perceived failures that have made him pretty much hate himself.
Clint sort of sees himself as an antihero, but while it's true he'll do things like steal money and jewels from criminals and keep it (or, more likely, give it to charities or people in need) he is in no way a true antihero and is in fact a hero, full stop. He will go up against bad guys - superpowered, alien, or as normal as your everyday tracksuit-wearing mob goons - in order to help and/or protect innocent people. Especially innocent people that he feels are somehow under his jurisdiction, due to location or emotional connection or whatever.
Clint is a loyal as hell and will risk everything down to his life for the people he's loyal to. It's hard to shake his loyalty once you've got it, too, even if he makes a lot of noise about how he should be in charge, or how you're doing it all wrong, or he should break out on his own.
He's a bit insecure, on the surface, but it's really more that he knows how hard he needs to work to stay at the level he is compared to the super-powered heroes that he fights with. He can't get lazy. He can't give himself slack. He needs to do anything and everything in his power to keep himself at top condition, and stay independent in as many ways as possible. This also causes a bit of a reckless streak - in the name of keeping up with the other more superpowered Avengers, he will occasionally do supremely dangerous things, such as throw himself off roofs or out of helicopters. Sometimes it pays off and the other Avengers have his back enough that he's no worse for the wear. Sometimes it doesn't, and he ends up in the hospital.
And, on a more intimate note... Clint has a problem with ladies. His wife Bobbi? He'd known her for less than two weeks when they got married, and she's still the person he loves most in the world, and is the most hung up on (though it makes sense, given how their relationship... ended. And then rekindled. And then ended again.). He has fallen in love over and over again, even on the smallest provocation - he's gotten better about that as he's gotten older (no more "she's the only one I've ever loved!!" about a woman he's only known for two days, hello Natasha), but it's still difficult for him to have a physical relationship with someone he's not emotionally invested in, at some level. That isn't to say he can't hook up with people, but he tends to get at least a little more invested than "most" guys.
He is a very decent guy. If you push him too hard, though, he will fuck your shit up. The extent to which he's willing to go depends on where his mental state is and which (if any) of the people he trusts are there to see. With the Avengers or most of the people, he tends to incapacitate as humanely as possible. When he's not in a good place and they're not around... he gets a little bit rougher. He won't kill you unless he has to, but he will shoot you in the knees, in the eyes, in the neck. He will incapacitate you, he will fuck your shit up, he will make sure you can't do whatever you were doing again. But he won't kill you unless there is literally no other choice. And then he hates himself a little for getting so violent in the first place.
So that's Clint Barton - self-loathing, grandstanding, a desire to prove that he can handle this himself (even when he can't), and falling in love with every kickass lady he meets. Okay, maybe not every one, but damn close.

Roleplay Sample:Okay, this looks bad, Clint thought to himself as he hung from the edge of a roof. He and Kate had been
trying to sneak up on the bastards, but they'd caught wind of them and jumped them on the roof. From the sounds of things, Kate was still giving them hell. Unfortunately, he was stuck dangling from the ledge, with no footholds to push himself back up and a graze from a bullet that wasn't the end of the world but that was impeding his ability to pull himself back up unaided.
A quick glance down confirmed that if he took this fall, he'd probably end up breaking his pelvis or something,
again, and he wasn't exactly eager to re-live that experience. So instead, he just hung there, concentrating on not losing his grip before Kate could come haul him up.
"This is so not my idea of a fun way to spend a Friday night," he grumbled to himself. There was the thunk of an arrow sinking into flesh, and then a scream as one of the track suits went careening over the side of the roof, over Clint's head. "Good luck sticking the landing, bro!" Clint shouted as the guy fell. He didn't twist to see where he landed, though - best not to risk losing his grip. There was a bit more shouting, and then silence for a good half a minute before Kate's head popped into view above him.
"Hey, boss, you hanging in there?" she asked.
"Katie, I will give you a full update on my status when you help me
not fall six stories onto the concrete below, okay?" he said, trying not to sound
too stressed out by the fact that he was dangling from the roof and his arms were starting to go a little numb and he was
really sick of falling from high places.
Kate just laughed, before grabbing his arm and bracing herself, helping to pull him back up onto the roof. He flopped onto his back and just stared up at the sky for a minute.
"Hey, Katie-bird?"
"Yeah?"
"Next time, let's not do this on the roof of a building."
